James Machell: Editor

“I have been offering editing services since joining the mashead for Utopia Science Fiction Magazine and I prefer a face to face approach. It’s one thing to apply feedback a list of line edits and another to actually have a discussion and find a way forward as a team. I therefore prefer to have a discussion in addition to written edits, either in person or by Zoom, at least once per 5000 words of prose submitted.”

A refined still life of three hardcover books in deep navy, charcoal, and burgundy, each with understated typography on the spine, arranged standing upright on a matte black shelf. A single thin volume lies horizontally on top, creating a precise, architectural stack. Behind them, an abstract blur of more books and neutral-toned walls suggests a private study or author’s library. Directional studio lighting from the upper right creates subtle highlights on the book cloth textures and fine shadows along the edges, emphasizing form and craftsmanship. The mood is serious, intellectual, and contemplative. Photographic realism, with a tight, centered composition and shallow depth of field, ideal as a professional hero image for an established literary figure’s website.
